Earth Day Network News

Working for safe, healthy schools

Too many school children are trying to learn in buildings which are toxic to them and the environment. We can stop the cycle of environmental degradation by giving our kids green and healthy schools, healthy food, and environmental education which fosters awareness and inspires civic action. That is why Earth Day Network is launching a nationwide initiative to make every K-12 school in the US green within one generation. We must start now to build the environmental leadership of tomorrow! Our GREEN Schools Initiative is based in part on the strong success of our National Civic Education Project (NCEP) which is expanding to five major U.S. cities: Washington, DC, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Cincinnati, and Chicago. We have doubled our commitment this year to take civic action to improve the environmental health of America's communities. Read more about our success!

President Kathleen Rogers discussed the results of EDN's policy work on current federal energy bills, including phasing out the inefficient incandescent light bulb. EDN also hosted a Women and Climate Change roundtable discussion at the Summit.

Broadening the Movement

Earth Day Network reprised its role as one of ten Conveners of the 2007 National Latino Congreso, October 5-9 in Los Angeles. The delegates quickly and unanimously approved EDN's three resolutions: a moratorium and phase out of coal-fired plants, a demand for green schools, and financing for renewable energy. Earth Day Network Partners Spotlight

Mobilizing Our Youth

As the world wakes up to the reality of the climate crisis, it needs the fearless and uncompromising momentum of its youth. Earth Day Network is mobilizing its partners to help register millions of new young voters in the U.S. in support of critical state and national environmental initiatives.

On September 10th, EDN convened a meeting of leading youth-focused civic engagement groups to form a youth voter registration and mobilization table. At this meeting, EDN also announced plans to launch an online voter registration drive. Read more about the history of our voter education work through Campaign for Communities (C4C). You can also join us at Power Shift 2007, November 2-5, the first-ever US national youth summit on global warming.

Dear Amy, How much more efficient are toaster ovens than ordinary ovens? Kate in Petoskey, MI

Great question! In general, small appliances use about half the wattage of an electric oven because they heat a smaller area doing the same job. A toaster oven consumes much less energy than a conventional oven. It's faster and ideal for cooking small quantities of food. BTW - here's another quick tip - preheat the oven only when necessary. Most foods will cook satisfactorily without preheating.
